Humans experience stress because it is a physiological response originally meant to help us identify a threat and keep us safe. Stress releases a hormone known as cortisol to help us determine a fight or flight response. However, chronic stress is a serious problem that affects not only your mental well being but also your overall health. It compromises your sleep, your productivity and even your relationships. A number of studies show that vacations really do work on alleviating stress by temporarily removing people from their day-to-day activities and environments, which tend to be the sources of regular stress.

Scientific research shows that women who do not take regular vacations were three times more likely to be depressed and anxious. This is backed up by other research that proves that people who take regular vacations report feeling extremely happy, with an overall feeling of well being compared to those who did not go on vacation. The studies prove that leisure activities, including taking vacations, contributed to higher positive emotional levels.
Though it seems counter-intuitive, studies show that more vacation time for employees actually increases company productivity. In addition, it has been found that when employees take time off for travel, it actually decrease their number of sick days. Taking vacations also promotes work-life balance, which translates into increased work quality.
Workers also report feeling more creative after taking time off, and more than 70% of them reported feeling more satisfied with their jobs when they traveled and took regular vacations.
This applies to Entrepreneurs as well. Even if you are self-employed, you will see an increase in your productivity after a vacation. Entrepreneurs sometimes work around the clock so traveling, and taking that much needed down time, will really boost your creativity and productivity. You will once again look forward to getting back to business!

For many of us, we are often so buried in our day to day lives, and at work, and concerned about deadlines that we forget to take a break. Not taking a break is very counter-productive. Why? It doesn’t give our brains the time to slow down and recover from the information overload. As a result, you not only lose focus and productivity, you also encounter more creativity blocks.
So, give yourself time to unwind and don’t think about work, or things you have to do, when on vacation. Trips and vacations can provide you with moments of great creativity and insight!
Studies have shown that people who are on vacation have at least two hours more of quality sleep at night. This leads to better sleeping habits when they return back home from their holiday. Who doesn’t want to get a more restful night’s sleep?
A lot of people who work long hours not only become less productive, they also become less present. So, in essence, people who forgo their vacations aren’t doing themselves, or their companies, any favors. Even if they are physically present, they have just mentally checked out. They end up daydreaming or surfing the Internet, instead of focusing on the task at hand.
Whether you plan to take a few weeks off to escape the stress, or just drive somewhere on the weekend to unwind, traveling really is a good solution. Not only does it allow you to put everything on hold, it also helps you put things into perspective. You’ll be enriched on so many levels that you’d wonder why you are not taking vacations more often!
