The beautiful Italian wine region.

6 Places in Italy for Every Wine Lover

Exploring Italy’s wine country offers abundant pleasures for  wine lovers, including the opportunity not only to discover new wines, but also to enjoy excellent Italian wine vintages with the country’s finest food.

If you’re an Italian wine lover and are in need of serious inspiration on where to go and enjoy the best wine the country has to offer, here are six one-of-a-kind experiences you need to put on your dream list:

Dinner at Trattoria Della Posta in Piedmont

Considered one of the best restaurants in Piedmont, Trattoria Della Posta highlights the distinctiveness of the regional cuisine as well as boasts a unique selection of wine coming from Italy’s finest wine region. Piedmontese cuisine draws inspiration not only from Italian culture, but also French, due to its close proximity to the French border. While you’re here, make sure to order the classic Vitello Tonnato, a tender piece of veal accentuated by a rich and creamy tuna sauce. The waiters are quick to recommend Italian wine that goes perfectly well with the flavors of this dish.

A Tour of the Banca Del Vino at the University of Gastronomic Sciences

Italians take their food and wine very seriously, and it is here in Piedmont that the International Slow Food movement was born. While a visit to the heart of Slow Food is an experience in itself, as a wine lover you can’t miss a tour of the University’s epic wine vault. They hold multiple wine tours, and tastings of Italian red wine and white wine daily.

Orvieto, Umbria

Just a short drive from Rome, Umbria is teeming with ancient hillside towns and amazing Italian red wines made from the age-worthy Sagrantino grape. However, the most famous wine in the region is not a red but a white Orvieto blend, which is rumored to be the preferred wine of the Pope and his papal court. The white wine in the region can be either sweet or dry, depending on the style preferred by the winemaker.

A Glass of Prosecco in Venice’s Urban Vineyard

Owned by the Bisol family, who are prominent makers of Prosecco, the Venissa winery boasts of a fine selection. Don’t miss out on ordering a bottle of Dorona, a blend made from a white grape favored by Venice’s aristocrats. It was long thought to be extinct, but it was rediscovered here on Mazzorbo. In fact, the Venetian government partnered with the Bisol family to redevelop the Dorona vines on the island.

A Trip to Chianti for Fava Beans and a Glass of Wine

A visit to Italy is not complete without a visit to Tuscany. The region is famous for its amazing food and wine, and for good reason!  Our ‘Tap Into Your Terrific’ in Tuscany participants will totally testify to this. Head to a simple trattoria for a delicious lunch of Panzanella (Tuscan bread salad) and Fagioli Con Salsiccia (Beans with Sausage), coupled with a nice glass of Italian chianti wine, and you can’t get any more ‘local.’ Here’s a recipe from Epicurious that you might want to try when you return home.

Visit the Wine Region of Vittoria, Sicily

Sicilian wine is having its 15 minutes of fame right now. The wines of Mt. Etna seem to be getting more and more popular, and people are beginning to rediscover how special this unique island’s cuisine and wine really are.  Vittoria is the only wine region on the entire island to receive DOCG status, which is the government’s strictest regulation reserved for its most celebrated wines. The wine is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato and it is known for its light flavor and finesse. It does well when slightly chilled, and is perfect for sipping while sitting under the warm Mediterranean sun.

The Italian wine region is a beautiful area and one not to be missed when on holiday in Italy.

We include wonderful wine tastings in our Exclusive Experiences. During our 2016 trip to Tuscany, we added a surprise wine tasting  and truffle meal that was absolutely incredible.   The wine and food were amazing and the family that hosted us was just delightful.  Besides the wine and food, we thoroughly enjoyed learning a lot about Italian boys and their mothers.
