Must-Visit Places in Tuscany

Tuscany is a famous destination for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the allure of the food and wine. A lot of tourists who make their way to this Italian region are in search of fine art and medieval history, while others are curious to explore the extraordinary countryside and its rolling hills. Whatever the reason, Tuscany offers something for everyone.

Here are the places you must visit in Tuscany to get a feel for what this unique region has to offer:

Pisa

Located along the Arno River in the northwestern region of Tuscany, the city of Pisa bears the remnants of its former golden days as the commercial empire during the Middle Ages. Its famous Leaning Tower attracts millions of visitors every year, but truthfully there are a lot more attractions in this city that are worth visiting. Women traveling together will find that the city is home to a number of charming hole-in-the-wall restaurants and lovely wineries. It also has much to offer from its medieval center, including the beautiful Duomo and Baptistery, to its parks, statues, the homes of Lord Byron and Shelley, and a walk along the river.

Siena

Just like Pisa, Siena offers tourists a taste of the good ol’ days with its well-preserved historic center and medieval horse racing tradition, known as Il Palio. Siena is built on three hills and is home to one of the most authentic and important Gothic cathedrals south of the Alps. It remains one of the most popular places to visit in Tuscany as it still houses many of the stunning works of art and architecture dating back to the Middle Ages.

Florence

Touted as the art capital of Italy, Florence is often described as an outdoor museum for the pieces of art and architectural treasures scattered around the city. There is no shortage of fine art in the city, as it boasts of a number of museums, stunning churches and internationally-esteemed art galleries. Aside from its art scene, Florence is home to some of the best restaurants in the Tuscan region.  In addition, women and men alike will also delight in the shopping ~ both in the stores and in the local Florence markets. Finally, no trip to Florence would be complete without some scrumptious Gelato ~ there are many places to stop throughout the city to delight your palate.

Women traveling together will also surely delight in the many wine tasting tours and day trips organized just a short drive outside the Tuscan capital. This is a wonderful way to wind down after you’ve done a lot of the art tours in the city.

Lucca

Many tourists and locals alike find pleasure in visiting Lucca. Not only is it famous for its selection of restaurants spread throughout the city, it is also an excellent place to stock up on your favorite Italian delicatessen. Lucca is also best known for its imposing Renaissance walls and the medieval center that it encloses. The Duomo San Martino is home to many historical treasures, such as Tintoretto’s Last Supper and the Tomb of Ilaria del Carretto. The Pallazzo Pfanner also has beautiful baroque gardens, while the San Michele church has a charming museum. If you fancy a good view of the city, Lucca has several well-preserved towers that you can climb.

Montepulciano

Most people are familiar with Tuscany for its cities rich in art, but the charming towns and smaller cities also deserve some serious consideration. Situated on a 600-meter high limestone ridge, Montepulciano is a medieval town located in southern Tuscany. It is teeming with elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches and charming squares spread throughout the city. It also boasts of vast panoramas of the wonderful Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana valleys that surround it.
